Blogger Spotlight | Kimberly at The Kim Konnection

Kimberly The Kim Konnection

This week’s Blogger Spotlight goes to someone who is twinning my name, Kimberly at The Kim Konnection! She is a recent college graduate that enjoys online personalities and hopes to be a publicist to one someday. The interview just talked about her life relating to feeling like “a big fish in a little pond” and her blogging experience. Read the interview below, check out the links to her social media, and her blog.

Kimberly The Kim Konnection

Q1: Who is your favorite “online” personality and why?

It’s actually been tied lately between Patricia Bright and Louise Pentland. I’ve been watching Patricia for years and she gives such good advice in various fields (beauty, fashion, life, career, romance, etc.) and I always find myself going back to her videos. Also, she’s a dark skinned woman like myself and that representation is very important to me. And I love Louise because she’s hilarious for one, but she’s also such a strong, compassionate person. She’s been through alot, but she has accomplished so much and to see her so happy makes me very happy. They’re both very inspiring women who have changed me for the better.

Q2: What is your favorite topic to write about on your blog?

My favorite topic to write about is either stories about trips I’ve taken or advice posts based on my personal experiences. It’s always interesting to think back to events that have happened to me and see how they could potentially be helpful to others. I love letting others learn from my mistakes haha.

Q3: What inspires you to keep moving forward with your blog, even though you said you can feel like “a big fish in a little pond”?

What inspires me is seeing other bloggers doing well with their blogs and getting excited about the content they put out. Also, hearing positive feed back on my own blog is really motivating as well. I also would love to see how my blog grows and changes when I finally do move away and all that.

Q4: Do you think that bloggers who write about many different topics or those who have one niche are more successful? Explain.

I think different topics. You can be very successful when focusing on one niche, but then you’re only able to reach one niche audience. Whereas with different topics, you’re able to reach different kinds of audiences, even if they only like a select few of your posts. It just gives you more reach and allows your blog to offer a little something to (almost) everyone. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with niche blogging and a lot of people are very good at it.

Q5: What is one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to start their very own blog?

Be patient and give what you want to receive. If you want views, comments, and likes on your blog, especially from other bloggers, then you need to view, comment and like their blogs. Not everyone is going to return the favor but it’s a good way to get involved and get to know other bloggers, which will really help in the long run. It also helps get your name out there as well. And if you don’t know where to find other bloggers, go on twitter and join blogger chats!

Blogger Spotlight | Lili at Simple Inspired Life

lili simple inspired life

This week’s Blogger Spotlight goes to an inspiring individual named Lili! She is a college student at the University of Toronto and she loves to spread those positive vibes we talk about all the time on my blog. The interview just talked about her as a person as well as a bit into her life of blogging. Read the interview below, check out the links to her social media, and her blog.

lili simple inspired life

Q1: Since you live to inspire others, what inspires YOU to keep blogging each day?

Writing has always been therapeutic for me- it’s how I process my emotions. Every one of my posts is relevant to my life in some way; blogging is a bit like journaling, but accessible to everyone. If I were to think of one thing that inspires me to keep blogging each day, it’s the thought that maybe the lessons my experiences have taught me can help others live their best lives.

Q2: Who are your top 3 favorite bloggers and why?

Leo Babauta of Zen Habits is someone who inspired me to start my own blog. I love his writing style, his advice, and the simplicity he loves to foster in life. He definitely motivates me every day to be better as a blogger and a person. Dani DiPirro of Positively Present is another one of my favorite bloggers; I love her take on life. There’s a ton of negativity in the world, and it’s easy to focus on that. I always remind myself and others that happiness comes from the inside out, and Dani embodies the joyful spirit that I aspire to have. Lastly, there’s Alden Tan of alden-tan.com. His writing is extremely raw, uncensored, and to-the-point. He cuts straight to the chase and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. I don’t agree with everything he says, but the way he voices his opinions is fearless, and I admire that. Plus, he gives lots of great advice!

Q3: What is one quote that you live by and why?

Ever since I first heard the George Harrison song, I’ve lived by the quote “all things must pass.” It means different things to me in good times and bad: when things aren’t going so well, it reminds me that time will heal all wounds and I’ll make it through. In good times, it reminds me to appreciate what I have because nothing lasts forever. It’s always good to remember that time passes quickly when you’re not looking, and that every moment, and every experience, is infinitely valuable.

Q4: What are you studying in college and what do you hope to do with that?

I’m studying classics and linguistics. I’m fascinated with the development of language, and the ways in which it’s still changing constantly. Plus, I’ve been a classics nerd forever- I’ve been studying Latin and Ancient Greek for years. I always want to understand language better, not just because I find it incredibly fun but also because it helps a ton with effective writing. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and gaining a better understanding of language is how I strengthen my skills.

Q5: Do you have any advice for someone who wants to begin writing a blog?

My best advice would be this: blog for yourself first, and for others second. Don’t do it for the money or the followers. Write about what makes you happy, and if you want to become successful, you will. Everything else will follow. Others will want to read your work if it’s passionately inspired and enthusiastic- all the marketing tips in the world won’t help you if your heart isn’t in your writing. Be excited about your blog, and it’ll go where you want it to go.

Hiatus?

hiatus

hiatus

Well, it seems I’ve hit a dilemma with my life being so busy. I thought, with having so many posts prepared ahead of time, I would be able to keep scheduling posts after those and keep up this semester while I student teach, but that does not seem to be the case. I’m pretty disappointed in myself as this was one of my goals. However, I am not giving up. I still am going to try my best to at least get content to you guys twice a week. I do not want to have my Blogger Spotlights as the only post I publish every single week, so that is why I say twice a week.

I have a lot of posts in mind, I just have not had the time to sit down and write them. I will likely change up my blogging schedule temporarily, or possibly permanently, once I am able to get some time in to do so. I feel like posting as often as I have has really made it hard to come up with original content and stuff that you guys actually want to see. I love writing and I love talking to you guys and I don’t want it to ever feel like a chore.

This being said, I am likely going to be on a hiatus until I get the free time to write for you guys. Recently, my days have been filled with nothing but lesson plans, worksheets, work, and teaching middle schoolers… and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just don’t think I’m ready to give up on Life of Kimberly. Not now, and hopefully not ever.

Love you, guys. 💖

September Goals

september goals

This month is going to be my last one in my current student teaching placement and I am already super sad about it. I have grown to love middle school so much and I’m going to miss my teacher and the kids something fierce. However, I am excited to be in an elementary school for my last two placements! I believe my first one will be 5th grade… or is it Kindergarten? Ha! I know I have both and I know I’ll do both, the question is, in what order???

september goals

This post is going to include some goals for me because you guys know that I have to write it down or I won’t do it. These are the things I want to accomplish this month, whether it be blogging-related, personal, or just random.

  • Decide on a new apartment. If you didn’t know, I am looking to move into a new apartment complex as I have been having some issues with my current one and I think it would just be best if I eliminated the stress entirely. I am looking into one area that is a bit more expensive, but I’m hoping I can swing it.
  • Continue blogging every other day. This is seeming like it may be impossible with my schedule, but I am going to try to crank out as many blog posts as I can over the next three days I have off at my job. I’ll be at school during the day, so I’ll have a few hours after to work on them.
  • Spend more time with my puppy! My more dog probably thinks that I hate him. With me working or student teaching every single day, I hardly get to spend time with him anymore. I am currently forcing myself to stay awake just so he isn’t locked in his crate all night after being in there all day. 🙁 #horribledogmom
  • Spend time with my friends. I literally have been keeping to myself 24/7 here lately and it’s starting to take a toll on me. I used to spend time with most of my friends at least every week or so and now I can’t tell you last time I saw one of my friends, except the ones I work with!
  • Clean my house ENTIRELY. I have made a lot of progress with this and done a lot of steps to complete this one but I have yet to be able to thoroughly clean my apartment since I moved in as I have worked every single day, or been doing something to do with student teaching.
  • Finish decorating. Although these seems a bit pointless since I’m moving in December but I’ve got all my stuff ready to hang up and complete my decor and just never can seem to find the time to do it.
  • Successfully complete one season of Game of Thrones. As I am on season one, it will likely be that one. I am so busy all the time that I never have the time to just sit down and watch it, even though I’ve already fallen in love with the series after only a few episodes!

Honestly, I didn’t realize how ridiculous some of these goals are, but my life has come to this point where I have to pencil in time with my dog… that’s pretty sad. I’m hoping things will die down more after student teaching and hopefully, I’ll find a job just off the bat (although I’m not holding my breath as December grads seem to have the hardest time when it comes to education jobs).

What are your goals for this month? Leave them in the comments down below!

Blogger Spotlight | Andolina at Lessons from a Student Mom

andolina lessons from a student mom

This week’s Blogger Spotlight goes to a busy bee named Andolina! She is a mom, student, and blogger. She calls herself a “professional student” because she’s been going to school for 8 years to get her degree. That’s dedication! The interview primarily focused on being a parent and student simultaneously, as this obviously is a hard thing to do. Read the interview below, check out the links to her social media, and her blog.

andolina lessons from a student mom

Q1: What is the toughest part of being a college student and parent?

I’m going to have to get down to the real, down-to-earth answer to this question. The most difficult part, for me, is the regret I have for not completing my schooling before my babies were born. The financial struggle I’ve put myself and my kids in is huge. But besides this, and on a more day-to-day level, would be finding the time to spend quality time with them and keep my grades where I want them to be. I’m a perfectionist and I study constantly when I’m in school. This puts a strain on my time management because I want to give all of my time to them and school at the same time.

Q2: What advice would you give to a parent wanting to go back to school?

Do it. It’s hard, but it’s worth it. I also think that being a parent and college student can show your children the importance of education. I know that the fact that I have homework helps my son cope with the fact that he must do it too. I try to create study times where we sit down together and work on our school work.

Q3: What about psychology/mental health interests you the most?

This has got to be the most difficult question I’ve ever been asked. My interests can be a little out there, and may seem weird to some people, but I’d have to say that the most interesting thing about psychology for me is the psychology of criminals. I have a strong desire to understand the mindset that criminals (specifically those that commit murder and other heinous crimes) have when they are committing their crimes. The truth of the matter is, many of them aren’t mentally ill in the way that the world portrays them to be. Are they wired different? Of course, but they aren’t all psychopaths and the world really needs to understand the difference between criminally insane and psychopath.

Q4: Do you personally struggle with any mental health issues that help you in this endeavor?

Yes actually. I have for years, although just recently (within the past few months) finally reached out for help and got a diagnosis for the issues I’ve faced for years. I’ve been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Mood Disorder (which ties into anxiety), and Moderate Anxiety. There is still a daily struggle, but given the fact that I’ve only recently gotten medical help, they’ve allowed me to learn that there are a lot of things that I can overcome on my own.

Q5: What is one piece of advice you would give to another student/parent blogger?

Don’t give up. Blogging is in no way a get rich quick scheme. If it was, I’d be loaded already. Let me tell you a secret…. I’m not. I’ve only just started seeing a small return on the hours I’ve put in. I’m 3 months in, and I worked my a** off to get to this point. If it is something you are passionate about, don’t let the slow days (and weeks) turn you away from blogging. It has huge potential.

How to Gain Instagram Followers

how to gain instagram followers

Now, I am by no means an expert at anything when it comes to social media. I’ve been learning about it all for the past two years, as I’ve grown my blog in the process. Since then, I never really focused much on Instagram. Recently, I’ve seen what an amazing tool it is and how much it can help me get traffic on my blog. Whenever I posted my August Goals, many people commented asking for a post about how I have gained as many followers as I have. I figured, why not share what I’ve done?

how to gain instagram followers

#1 Post regular content.

This may seem obvious but I did not post on a regular basis before working on growing my Instagram following. I rarely posted at all actually, unless it was a photo of my animals or a bomb selfie I took. Now, I put a lot of photos that relate to my blog and it really seems to draw people’s attention.

#2 Participate in Facebook groups.

love Facebook groups for bloggers. They are the reason I get so much traffic on my blog. I find so much support and help from other bloggers and being in them has helped with my Instagram as well. Specifically, I joined a group called UK Instagram Support (no I’m not from the UK but she said anyone could join 😋) and it’s amazing. So much love and people actually follow the rules that are given, so the support is legit.

#3 Be active on other Instagrammers’ profiles.

You get what you give. This is obvious but many wonder why they don’t get activity on their profiles but they don’t do anything but post their own photos. I try my best to go through my feed, go on hashtags I enjoy, and visit other bloggers’ profiles to show the love and inspire them to, hopefully, visit my profile!

I know this wasn’t jam packed with a worksheet, tips to make money, and all that jazz but this is 100% real, free advice that truly helped me gain my following. I may not get thousands of new followers a day but the followers I get are genuine and they have stayed, kept liking my photos, and kept engaging on them as well. This is all I ask for!

What are your tips for growing your Instagram account? Leave them in the comments to share the wealth!

HONEST Review & Swatches | Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette

abh subculture palette

There’s been quite a bit of controversy over this palette and, after testing it out myself, I’m a little confused. On the blog today, we’re going to be swatching and reviewing the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture eyeshadow palette. First off, I never really follow the “trends” when it comes to opinions unless it is that of a beauty guru that has similar makeup wants, skin type, etc. to myself and is one that I trust. So, when Laura Lee gave some sketch comments on this palette, I was weary… but even she, as well as Manny MUA, stated that this palette is pig-men-ted. That’s a sell for me so I immediately went and purchased it from Sephora.

abh subculture palette inside subculture

When I came home to this palette on my doorstep, I went inside and immediately swatched it. First off, I totally see the fallout aspect that people are getting all bent out of shape about. It does have fallout but… it’s not as bad, in my opinion, as everyone is making it out to be. Granted, I watched the videos above and it looks pretty bad but I did finger swatches (which, yes, I realize will have different results) and I really dig into the colors whenever I do this. Even digging in, I did not get as much fallout as I thought I would after watching the above videos. I don’t know if they stepped up the formula a bit after seeing all the negative comments/reviews regarding the palette and they are sending out improved versions, but that’s the only explanation that I have for this? I honestly think this is a beautiful palette. I’m obsessed with the unique color scheme and these shades are so pigmented, it’s insane.

fallout fallout 2 fallout 3

Now that we’ve touched on the tea, let’s get into the swatches of this bad boy.

top row subculture

Top Row (top to bottom, left to right in palette): Cube, Dawn, Destiny, Adorn, All Star, Mercury, and Axis

bottom row subculture

Bottom Row (same order as above): Roxy, Electric, Fudge, New Wave, Untamed, Edge, and Rowdy

And that’s my review of this palette! I would definitely get this if you haven’t yet. Fallout is not something that makes me say no to a palette and it normally just means that there is a lot of pigment in the formula, which you can clearly see is true for this one.

Blogger Spotlight | Hannah at Rand0mg4l

hannah rand0mg4l

This week’s Blogger Spotlight goes to Hannah at Rand0mg4l. She is a new blogger, only two months in, who is about to start college in September. The interview itself mainly focused on her being a new blogger, as this is exciting and I love to hear how we all got started. Read the interview below, check out her links to her social media, and her blog.

hannah rand0mg4l

Q1: What are you most excited about starting out in the blogging community?

This is going to sound so clichè but just meeting new bloggers and learning about their story of why they started. I also am so excited to be aiming and hitting some goals I have for my blog, which I know will be supported by the community. Another thing is collaborations with other bloggers and hopefully some brands/companies; meeting new people through the community and creating content with someone else’s ideas in it too will be so much fun! And the final thing, that at the moment I only have a Twitter account for my blog but in the future I want to create an Instagram and Facebook page for it! So keep an eye out!

Q2: Since you are starting college soon, what do you want to study and what is your dream job?

I’ll be studying BA Hons Dance as this is what I’ve studied and had as a hobby for all my life. As for dream job; it has changed so many times over the years but still within the area of performing. I would love to be a choreographer or dance teacher, as I feel incredible when passing on knowledge or knowing I helped someone succeed at what they love (and in turn what I love too). It’s so amazing to see success in an area you strive to be in and soon to be part of. So I cannot wait to start my next chapter of studying and learning about dance to further my love and passion for the art.

Q3: Do you have anything you really want to learn as a new blogger? If so, what?

I would love to know a lot more about the business side of things, finding out what things like DA and SEO are? I am currently not a self-hosted blogger but have started thinking that maybe in the future I would become one if I felt I could handle the business side of things. I’ve seen people speak of media kits as well before, this must mean I have a lot to learn. I also love learning about why other bloggers started, and what it was that made them want to blog, every story is different and that’s what makes me so interested in them.

Q4: What inspired you to start your blog?

Truthfully, it was more of a spear of the moment thing, I had seen a few people’s blogs in the past and wondered what it would be like. My friend Kellie Nee was actually more of an inspiration to get going with it than anything as I knew she had one and looked to be thoroughly enjoying it. Now I can see why! I also wanted an online space where I can write about whatever and whenever I wanted, I already knew of the supportive community it had and knew I’d be embraced with positivity.

Q5: Do you have a quote that you live by? If so, what is it? If not, why not?

I absolutely love quotes! I find them so inspiring and I can relate or find meaning in most of the quotes I read. Personally, I feel as though I live by quite a lot but my favourite one would probably be “Sometimes on the way to a dream, you get lost and find a better one.” This quote was given to me on a plaque I hang in my room from my Mum and was given to me at a time I needed most in my life. It acts as a constant reminder that my life isn’t one straight journey, I may fall, trip or completely change route on my path but it will always be for the best.

Note from the Blogger:

I’ve only been blogging 2 months and that I’m extremely thankful for all the support and positivity I’ve received from the blogging community and anyone who reads my posts since I’ve started not long ago.

Review & Swatches | Karrueche x ColourPop She Palette

she palette

Karrueche and ColourPop are back at it again! They have released another collaboration collection that featured several pieces, including this gorgeous palette, the She palette. This is part of the Fem Rosa collection which included three lippies, a face palette, and this eyeshadow palette.

she palette

Now, ColourPop is known for their Super Shock Shadows that come in special packaging so they do not dry out, but awhile back they released pressed eyeshadows! This palette is in that form and, let me tell you, their pressed shadows are just as amazing as their SSS.

inside she palette

This palette just screams Valentine’s Day to me. I can’t wait to break it out for some feminine looks during that time of the year. In the palette, you get 12 eyeshadows and it retails for $16.00 USD. At about $1.33 per shadow, there is no beating this quality.

top row she

This row, the top one, features three metallic shades and the one and only satin in the palette. The swatches top to bottom align with the palette from left to right: Ladylike, Babe, Dainty, and Chick. These are the much more light and soft colors if you want a very feminine look without going too dark or sultry.

middle row she

The second row features all metallic shades and it gets into more of the dark colors that I am drawn to. From top to bottom, we have Mademoiselle, Gal, Empress, and Filly.

bottom row she

The third and final row features all matte shades to help with blending and making that smokey or seamless look with the previous shadows. I have successfully created an entire look with this palette so it is definitely possible with the shades provided. This row, from top to bottom, is Dear, Missy, Damsel, and Duchess.

The pigment in these shadows is unreal and you can’t beat with a stick for that price. I highly recommend this palette to those who love the reddish, pink, and warmer shades. It is currently out of stock but be sure you get your hands on it once it comes back!
