The Liebster Award

I am so excited to be writing this as I was, once again, nominated for the Liebster Award. When I was previously Blogs for Days, I was also nominated and I was super proud! This time, I was nominated by Lisa so make sure you go check out her blog and leave some love.

liebster award

So, for this award, the person nominating you asks you 11 questions and you answer them, nominate 11 bloggers, and create 11 new questions for them to answer on their blogs! Here are the questions that Lisa asked me.

1. What inspired you to start a blog?

My blog started as an outlet for my anxiety and depression. I have struggled with this for as long as I can remember and it took me up until two years ago, when I started my first blog, to realize that I needed help. I got on some medicine and I created Blogs for Days. After awhile, I decided to change to Life of Kimberly as I felt it fit me better and I love when blog names include the names of the bloggers. Initially, I had no idea there was such a large community of bloggers but I quickly discovered them on Twitter and kept engaging and meeting new people until I got to the point where I felt super comfortable in the blogging world. I feel so welcome and part of the community now. ūüíē

2. What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is from Harry Potter and it is said by Albus Dumbledore: “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” This has been a quote that has stuck with me throughout the years. I have had many dark times in my life where I felt there was¬†no “light” at the end of the tunnel. This is something that puts my mind into the proper state and helps me stay in the positive mindset that I have¬†focused in on for the past few years.

3. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what song would it be and why?

In Between by Beartooth, no question. This is my favorite song and I actually have lyrics from it tattooed on my back. This song is really just something that helps with my mental health overall. Specifically, when my mom passed away this past September, I was broken. I had come to the point where I was not sure what meaning I had left in life. I still struggle daily but I got my tattoo because I needed to force myself into who I was before. She would have never wanted me to be in this state and I¬†need to be happy for her. In the song, it says, “It’s easy to lose yourself, I know,” and that has stuck with me since the first time I hear the song.

4. What type of blog posts do you enjoy reading? (lifestyle, beauty, etc.)

I love to read all types but lifestyle, beauty, and college-related posts are generally the ones that I gravitate towards as they are what my niche is as well. I have a special place in my heart for beauty and college posts as they are what basically got me started in the blogging world. I have huge Pinterest boards for both of those areas!

5. What are your top 5 favorite films?

This is so hard! I have so many films that I love. If I had to choose just five…
#1 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
#2 Alice in Wonderland
#3 Nightmare on Elm Street
#4 Freddy vs. Jason
#5 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

6. What is your favorite season, and why?

Hands down, my favorite season is fall. I love the weather, the holidays, and just the general atmosphere during that time. Plus, that weather is what the majority of my clothing is made for so I definitely get to look a lot cuter when it is the fall, windy, and cool weather. I also just love the colors, all the beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges just speak to me.

7. If you could go back in time, where would you go?

If I could go back in time, I would go back to the birthday trip to Florida I had with my mom. She was so excited for that trip and she planned it just for us after my original plans had fallen through. She was one of the most selfless and amazing human beings I have ever known. Losing her has been the single most difficult experience I have ever had to deal with and I miss her every single day. I would go back to tell her all the things I wish I got to say before she passed, even though I knew she knew them. I would tell her how much I love her, I would hug her for as long as possible, and I would be able to hear her tell me, “I love you, baby girl,” one last time.

8. What is your biggest achievement so far?

I believe my biggest achievement in life so far is staying in college. I graduate in December and I could not be more proud of myself. There were days when I just wanted to throw the towel in and these last four years have felt like they would never come to an end. I cannot believe that I will have a bachelor’s degree in December. I have worked so hard for this accomplishment.

9. What is your biggest pet peeve?

I think my biggest pet peeve is probably just rudeness. It seems so simple but I try really hard to be happy and positive all the time and when someone is rude for absolutely no reason at all, or even if they have a reason, I just find it extremely intolerable. I understand being annoyed or upset but that should never transfer into how you treat a person. You could be the difference to any person you encounter and you never want that to be a negative experience.

10. What is the number 1 thing on your bucket list?

The number one thing on my bucket list is probably to move to a big city and make a life for myself. It seems like something that’s not over the top but I have lived in small towns my entire life where there’s not much to do and going on trips to big cities always make me so happy. I would love to live some place where I could literally walk anywhere and get where I need to go and I can just get work done in a little coffee shop around the corner. That kind of living has always been something I have strived for.

11. What is one thing you have learned since you started blogging?

I think the one thing that I have learned is to make content for you as well as your readers. Writing a blog generally is targeted at reaching a specific audience and, although you still want to do that, readers are not going to keep coming back if you are just writing for views/engagement. You need to write about things you love, things that have to do with you as a person. From my experience, these are the types of blogs that have the most success.

Now here are my 11 questions for the bloggers that I will be nominating.

  1. What is your favorite type of blog post to read?
  2. Do you have any special talents that no one really knows about?
  3. If you could brag on yourself about one thing, what would it be?
  4. What is your favorite kind of animal and why?
  5. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  6. What is your favorite part about the blogging community?
  7. What are your blogging goals for the rest of this year?
  8. What are your all-time favorite skincare products?
  9. Do you have a favorite band? If so, who are they and why are they your favorite? If not, why not?
  10. What are three things that you say all the time in real life?
  11. Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not?

Finally, these are the lovely people that I am nominating for the Liebster Award.

  1. Jacqueline at Jackie O My
  2. Stephanie at Steph & Home
  3. Indya at The Small Adventurer
  4. Briana at MySpiritedLifestyle
  5. Kasey at Adventures in Adulting
  6. Kami at Life with Kami
  7. Shaz at The Shaz Diaries
  8. Lay at Lay Summers
  9. Joyce at The Joyce Collective
  10. Cassidy at Cassidy’s Adventures
  11. Steph at Unwind with Steph

Congrats, guys! Don’t forget to tag me in your posts on social media so I can leave some love. ‚̧ԳŹ

August 2017 Blogging + Personal Goals

august goals

August is when my life really gets crazy so these goals are something I definitely need to focus in on and work towards. I start student teaching this month, I will be working still, and I want to make sure that I stay on top of my blogging schedule. That means that I have to plan, plan, plan! I have some big things in mind in my blogging life as well as my personal life.

august goals

Blogging Goals

  1. Reach 1,400 followers on Twitter. I am currently sitting just below 1,300 so I really want to try to push to make it to that 1,400 mark. My end-of-the-year goal is to make it to 2,000 but I don’t want to push myself too far and then get disappointed when it doesn’t happen so this is just a short term goal to make it to that.
  2. Continue blogging every other day. I am currently on a schedule where I blog every other day and this has been working out amazingly for me. I constantly have new content up and I am able to keep coming up with things because I have a break every other day.
  3. Reach 800 followers on Instagram. Instagram is something I just recently started trying to get more active on so I don’t want to push myself too far but I didn’t think I’d get to 700 so fast from where I was so I am going to shoot for 800 and hope for the best!
  4. Build @bliss_bloggers Twitter account. I just recently start a Twitter chat and retweet account for all us bloggers out there (if you’re not following, you should go do that here!). It’s a fun way to connect with bloggers, get your posts promoted for¬†free, and just have fun. I plan to expand it into a group Pinterest board and a Facebook group soon so stay tuned.

Personal Goals

  1. Dive head first into student teaching. I start on August 11th and I am sooo excited but also extremely nervous. I really just want to put my all into this because this is how I am going to get the experience I need to get my own teaching job after I graduate in December. Wish me luck!
  2. Finish at least one book. I used to read nonstop and now I feel like I never even crack open a book. I just updated my Kindle not long ago and I have tons of physical copies of books so I just need to finally get back into my old habits and read, read, read!
  3. Organize my apartment. My home is still a bit of a mess from moving in as I’ve still been working nonstop since that happened. I really want to finally get all my decorations and organization done this month so I can feel 100% comfortable every time I come home. I’m slowly working towards it but it’s a work in progress.
  4. Get back into actively planning every day. Planning is something I love to do and I love making my planner look adorable on top of that. I have all the supplies I need and, with a busier schedule coming, I should be able to easily get back into it. I just hate when I forget about it and don’t look at it for a day because it throws me off completely.

That’s it for my goals for the month of August! I hope you guys enjoyed reading them and I really hope I can make it through without dying of exhaustion! It’s going to be a busy month but I got this and I know I’ll make it the best one yet in 2017.

August Review | Hello, September!

Super late blog post for you guys… hope you don’t mind.

I cannot believe that August is already over. It feels like it began three days ago and it all just flew by. I feel awful because I haven’t been writing posts but I have been so busy that I have barely even seen my boyfriend… and he lives with me! Between classes starting, joining a sorority, my other school organizations starting back up, work, and just trying to have somewhat of a life, I haven’t been able to do much other than nap (when I get fit it into my schedule). I’m actually avoiding a nap right now so I can do some homework and finally get a post to you guys! (I know, I’m so sweet.)

I wanted to do this so I could see how I did on my goals for the month of August! My next post will be setting goals for September, of course, because how else would I get through each month without trying to plan everything out to a tee. So, without further blabbing, here is how I did on my goals for August.

Personal Goals Review

#1 Focus of loving myself a little more.¬†| I haven’t done awful with this but I haven’t done great. I try to look cute as far as my outfits but I haven’t put as much effort into my makeup… which really makes me sad! Like I said before, I love doing it but I am just so tired in the mornings that I don’t want to do anything that isn’t sleep for ten more minutes.

#2¬†Finish my current book of choice. |¬†I most definitely did not do this. I actually started another book on top of the two that I already have started. Of course, you can’t blame me for this one because it is¬†Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. (I KNOW, RIGHT?! I’M FANGIRLING, TOO.) I will make my way through them all… eventually.

#3 Throw myself into the semester/school activities. |¬†I have definitely done this… perhaps a little bit too much. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had any time to just relax and have fun. I’ve made time for a couple lunch dates with my best friend and late night dinner with my sisters but that’s really it. I need to learn that balance between it all.

#4 Pick up the apartment daily.¬†| I did SO much better at this but I still haven’t quite got it mastered. I did try to do something in the name of cleaning each day, even if it wasn’t much, and my boyfriend helped out a ton because he only has work to worry about. He’s really been a godsend these past few weeks.

#5 Lose 5 more pounds. |¬†I actually don’t know if I did this one or not! I’ve been pretty bad about tracking my calories the past couple of days but I need to get back on track with it and eat healthier. I’m really trying but it’s so hard when my habits become so irregular due to school. I need to weigh-in to see where I’m at soon!

Blogging Goals Review

#1 Reach 50 email followers. |¬†Failed. Miserably. I have a whopping total of 4 followers through my email subscription. I’m actually pretty sad about it. I don’t know what I did before that got me so many email followers but I’m going to have to up my game if I’m ever going to get to that amount again.

#2 Reach 50 Bloglovin’ followers. |¬†Well, definitely didn’t make it to 50 (maybe I should have set these goals a little lower?) but I got to 16 so that counts for something. I feel like that’s a good growth for as little as I’ve had time to be online this month.

#3 Continue to schedule posts ahead of time. |¬†I definitely didn’t manage to get the two weeks worth of posts out for my first two weeks of school, like I had hoped. I did have about a week and a half scheduled but after that, I dropped off the face of Planet Blog. I really am going to try to pick myself back up but I need a day where I can just get things done for my blog the entire day if that’s going to happen.

#4 Stay on my blogging schedule. |¬†I stuck to this until about halfway through the month after classes started. I still plan to keep doing things on this schedule but I may have to drop to only doing one post a week for now if I can’t keep up with three posts a week. I hate doing that but with how busy I am, that may be best for during the semesters.

#5 Keep up with my new Facebook group, Blogwarts. |¬†This one has much better success! With the help of my amazing admins on my Facebook group, I’ve been able to keep this going strong all throughout August. I’m super proud of Blogwarts’s success and I really hope it continues to grow into an amazing resource and blogging family.

Blogger Spotlight | Alex at “Me So Hapa”

For my next blogger to featured in my¬†Blogger Spotlight series, we have an amazing lady that likes to represent and embrace her culture as well as advocate for those who are similar to herself! I am featuring Alex from “Me So Hapa“. I recently became friends with this blogger through Twitter and she’s been a complete sweetheart from the start. I love her blog – especially how she features another hapa, like herself, in a segment called “Hapa Hour” every week! Now, onto the interview!

1. What do you think the biggest misconception is regarding “hapas”?
Oh man, there are several that come to mind. One being we are this “exotic” species. It drives me crazy. I am continually being asked, “what are you?” My response has literally become “I am human.” Another big misconception is how people are continually trying to put us into a “box”. For example, because I am half Japanese, I, therefore, am considered full Asian. Never mind the other half of me, that’s completely irrelevant due to the fact that as American’s we only see the “ethnic” side of someone rather than the “white”. However, it’s¬† hilarious because I am continually being told I am not Asian enough.
All these misconceptions are why I am producing a multicultural cabaret at The Triad in NYC (Click the link to check it out!), September 12th. I want to tear down the stereotypes, show the world that we Hapas are human and the bridge between cultures, ethnicities, and creeds. We are human.

we so hapa multicultural cabaret

2. What is your favorite food dish, why, and what does it include in it?
OMG, I love food and having to pick one dish sucks! Haha. Well, since I have to pick one, I’m gonna go with my maternal Grandmama’s Sweet Sour Cabbage with Marrow Bones, Short Ribs and Flanken in Tomato Sauce. This dish has been in my family for generations all the way back to Romania and France.

3. Are there cultures other than your own that you want to learn about? If so, which ones and why?
I want to learn about every culture! I think it’s absolutely fascinating how we are all so similar! Being a half Japanese, French, Russian, Romanian Jew I’ve really only explored the Jewish and Japanese side. I’m really excited to being going back to Paris with my family. I can’t wait to explore Parisian Culture. I feel like the last time I was there it was just all about hitting as many museums as possible.
I LOVE to travel! I’ve always been interested in Egyptian culture. I hope to visit Egypt one day. I also want to explore Asia! So much good food to eat!
I basically want to travel so that I can eat foods from different cultures.

4. What made you decide to start a blog based on your ethnicity?
I’ve never really felt like I belonged. When I moved to NYC I met so many other Hapas who felt the exact same way. I thought why not start something where I can bring people together that have always felt like an outsider. Hapas are a minority within a minority. Also, I love food! Hapas have a unique approach to food. I thought this could be a really cool blog. Oh, and each week I feature a Hapa and we talk about food and difficulties being multicultural in the entertainment industry. Like I said before, Hapas are continually being told they aren’t “white”, “black”, “Asian” etc. enough. With the lack of diversity on stage and screen, I wanted to voice these problems. Change begins with me.

5. If you could give one piece of advice to someone struggling to “live life”, what would it be?
Stop worrying so much about what other people think of you. Seriously, it will make your life soooo much easier and less stressful. Find what you are passionate about. Stop being scared of failure, that isn’t actually a thing… That is a state of mind. Surround yourself with good, positive people. Eat yummy food. Dye your hair that crazy color you’ve always wanted to try. Live your life to its fullest capacity and fill it with love! You and you alone have the power to change your life for the better! I feel it is our duty to leave this planet a better place. And remember to breathe!

August Goals

I can’t believe August is here already! It feels like yesterday that July started and I was getting everything ready for my boyfriend officially move in. Now he’s moved in, I’m loving my job, I signed up for sorority recruitment, and school starts in less than two weeks! I’m so happy that this time is finally back. I love summer but I feel like it’s far too long sometimes. I love school (yes, I’m one of¬†those) and being out for THREE MONTHS drives me up the wall with boredom.

Now, with a new month comes new goals! Not only will I be setting goals for the month of August but I’ll also be setting goals for the upcoming fall semester (Stay tuned for that post!). However, this is only for my monthly goals so let’s get into it…

Personal Goals

#1 Focus of loving myself a little more. | I’ve worked so hard towards this goal in the last year or so and I’ve really improved. However, with work and being busy, I’ve neglected it. I don’t try as hard and I don’t feel as good about myself because of it. I love doing my hair and makeup in the mornings because it makes me feel good. I love wearing edgy yet cute outfits because I feel amazing in them.

#2¬†Finish my current book of choice. | I am currently reading a novel called “A Version of The Truth” by Jennifer Kaufman and Karen Mack. I’m in love with it so far. I’ll definitely have to do a book review on the blog once I finish it but I can already tell it’s going to be a good’n.

#3 Throw myself into the semester/school activities. | School is one of my favorite parts of life… which explains why I want to be a teacher and get three degrees at minimum. I’m so excited for classes to start back and I’ll be a SENIOR this year. That’s crazy! I am finally going out for sorority recruitment so I’m beyond excited. I’m also an officer in a few organizations so I really want to plunge into that at full speed.

#4 Pick up the apartment daily. | I’m really bad at this. I get so busy with work here lately that I always let it get a mess before I clean it… mostly because I’m so exhausted and just wait until my day off. My goal is to continually pick up around here every day so I don’t have a HUGE mess to clean once my days off come around.

#5 Lose 5 more pounds. | I started counting calories and working on my weight loss journey once again almost three weeks ago. I have now lost 10 pounds since¬†then and I could not be more excited. I’m so proud of myself and I can’t wait to continue to lose more. As a guide, I want to lose at least 5 more pounds in the month of August. I lost so much recently that this shouldn’t be too hard if I keep eating healthy.

Blogging Goals

#1 Reach 50 email followers. | I had over 1,000 email followers on my previous blog before my unfortunate incident happened. This is honestly what hurt me the most because I lost all of them. Most of my social media was easy to transfer or pick back up but I haven’t had as much luck with this. I’m going to seriously try to up my email follower game this month. (You should totally go to the sidebar and sign-up if you haven’t already. ūüėė)

#2 Reach 50 Bloglovin’ followers. | The same goes for this as does my email followers. I had to remake my Bloglovin’ when I got a new blog (naturally). I don’t have barely any followers here either but I’m planning the same course of action. Hopefully, my Facebook blogging groups and Twitter will help me build up my followers. (If you want to be a doll, you can also follow me on Bloglovin’ here.)

#3 Continue to schedule posts ahead of time. | I think this is going to be what keeps me from getting behind once classes start back up so I have GOT to do it. I plan to get about two weeks worth out before the first day of classes (if I can manage it) so I don’t have too much to worry about until I’m at least a week into classes so I can focus on getting a feel for the semester.

#4 Stay on my blogging schedule. | I currently have new posts go live on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This puts me at posting three times a week, which seems to be good for me and an easier schedule to live up to. I even did a poll and everyone agreed that this was best. I want to stick to this throughout school coming back (this is REALLY hard for me).

#5 Keep up with my new Facebook group, Blogwarts. | Blogwarts is a new group that I created that is going AMAZINGLY. It’s based on Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series, only for bloggers! I have so many amazing admins and members that have made my 19 members grow to almost 100 now in only a few days. This is so mind-blowing. I couldn’t be more grateful. I want to keep up with this and help it grow as much as possible. (Click here if you want to join in and be sorted into your very own house. ‚ö°ÔłŹ)

Blogger Spotlight | Stew at “The Guy With The Owl Tattoo”

Praising bloggers for their amazing work is¬†something that I think isn’t done enough in our community. We are always quick to promote our own blogs and try to get all the comments and views we can but sometimes we can forget that all our other blogger friends have the same goals and ambitions, even if they’re in different forms! That is why I started the¬†Blogger Spotlight. I began this series on Blogs for Days and I want to continue it on Life of Kimberly.

The first blogger to be featured on LOK is¬†Stew¬†from “The Guy With The Owl Tattoo“. He is a blogger that has supported me from day one and we always keep in contact on Twitter. He’s a great guy with an awesome blog! I love that he posts as if he’s just communicating with his friends. I feel like I really know him when I read his blog and that’s amazing blog quality, in my opinion. So, without further ado, here’s my interview with Stew!

1. What made you go from being a podcaster to blogging?
I was in the middle of moving house and I really couldn’t dedicate enough time to the podcast I was currently on, I still have a Podcast Network that I am involved in and run but decided to give blogging a go as another avenue to still voice my opinions on bits and pieces. I will be going back to podcasting over the¬†coming¬†months but it will be something a bit different to the comic/geek style one I was on before.

2. How many tattoos do you have and do they have any meanings?

I have lost count of how many tattoos I have now, I have one completed¬†sleeve (bar a few touch up’s) which is just full of things I like and think look cool, I have an¬†incomplete¬†sleeve on the other arm which is bird¬†themed, (its how I came up with the name for my blog¬†as¬†well) which I am trying to finish by the end of this year if I can. I have a few others dotted about on my legs and chest. Most of them don’t really have any meaning, apart from one of two of them, I have a tattoo of my parrot which I really like, and one of a tooth that I have so much trouble with I had to get it removed after¬†spending¬†a small¬†fortune¬†trying to save it. I also have a quote from Shawshank Redemption which is one of m¬†favorite¬†Books/Films, I have “Get¬†busy living or get busy dying” which I think is quite cool.

3. What is your favorite movie genre and movies within it?

I love all movies, it’s really hard to pick a¬†specific¬†genre as its all about what mood I’m in when I pick a movie to watch. I was born in the 80’s so I am very fond of the movies from that sort of era with Ghostbusters, Teenage¬†Mutant¬†Ninja¬†Turtles¬†and¬†Back to the Future films being some of my all-time¬†favorites that I can just watch over and over again. That being said I watch all the new stuff that comes out when I get a chance and you can not beat sticking on a Disney film every now and the as well!

4. Have you ever played in a band with your drumming skills?

When I was younger I played a couple of Pop Punk bands at School, but since then all I really haven’t been¬†involved¬†with another band fully, Now I like to do is Jam with some friends of just sit in my drum room and play along to some of my¬†favorite¬†songs. I’m sure my¬†neighbors¬†love me.

5. What is one piece of advice you’d give to a new blogger?

Just do you! Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, we all start somewhere and come from different backgrounds so everyone’s audience/readership is different. There is no right why to blog so do what you like when you like, just enjoy it! The blogging community is nice, bunch of people for the most part so interact and you will make some friends in no time.

When life hands you sour lemons…

“When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.”

But, what if those lemons are sour…?

Many of you know me but don’t know this blog. Let’s start from the beginning, ¬†shall we?

Hello, my name is¬†Kimberly. This is my blog. You may remember a blog called Blogs for Days. That was my blog, too. See… life decided to hit me in the head and knock me out. Those sour lemons I mentioned? Yeah, they were fatal. Long story short… I lost my blog – over 100 posts, tons of comments, and many followers are gone. I was able to edit all of my social media so I could maintain the followers on those accounts but I am no longer using Blogs for Days. This is now my primary and permanent blog.

There is no chance of me getting the information from my previous blog back as it is partly my fault for what happened – even though I didn’t know it would delete all traces of BFD when I did what I did. However, I can’t change the past and I can’t fix what happened. I have talked with tech support for hours today and I think this new start is the best way to go.

On the bright side – yes, there’s a bright side – I am now 100%, completely, and totally¬†self-hosted¬†through¬†Bluehost*. I own my blog! I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to be able to say that. I have a pretty, new theme which I am working on completely customizing and I plan to get a header from Jemma at¬†Dorkface¬†to enhance it even more! I am extremely excited for this process and I cannot wait to get everything in order, the way my OCD likes it to be. :’)

If you haven’t already, feel free to check out my social media links in the sidebar or below! I hope you all follow me on this journey. Feel free to subscribe via email to my new and improved blog – as I hope you all will do.
