A fat girl living in a thin world

a fat girl living in a thin world

a fat girl living in a thin world

You know, I’ve always wanted to be like the pretty girls. Thin, petite, beautiful… the whole works. I wanted to feel like I fit into today’s societal norms. I have never been a small girl. Even as a kid, I grew up with a little extra always weighing on me. I was always made fun of for being “fat” in school. Once I started having problems finding clothes in all the mainstream stores, it became apparent that I was different. I wasn’t like my friends who were sizes 2 and 4 and could easily wear any medium shirt you handed them. I had to get an extra large to be comfortable and I hated the feeling of not being able to get something because they didn’t carry it in my size. Now, being a size 24, I feel like a complete failure.

I feel like I have failed myself and my body. The body that I was blessed with is now a symbol of my doubt in my abilities and of the lack of effort I’ve put into my health. Yes, I have a lot of factors working against myself but I don’t exactly eat and perform how I should in order to be at a healthy weight for myself. I should be around 130 pounds for someone my age and height. Being over twice that is something I never thought I’d ever be dealing with.

Most days, I look in the mirror and I hate what I see. I feel disgusted with the horror that I have created. Between giving in to my addiction of food, depression, and lack of self-control, I have never given my body the treatment it deserves. There are times when I try to eat healthier, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy lifestyle… but then I get discouraged by the tiniest thing and I’m right back at step one.

I had a realization this weekend that hit me hard. I realized that I have hit my all time low. I am so far in depression that I cannot pick myself up to even work towards a happier life. I need a push. Looking in the mirror and trying to shop for clothes this weekend was that push. As I looked through the plus size sections of Charlotte Russe and Forever 21, I saw how skewed our society is towards thin women.

I believe all bodies are beautiful. Whether you’re a size 2 or 22, you are beautiful and special in your own unique ways. However, I also believe in living a healthy lifestyle, no matter what that means for the number on the scale. Looking at the selections given in the “Plus” sections of these mainstream stores shows the lack of accommodations made for big girls. They provide the same clothes in the same styles, with no work towards a better fit or more appropriate materials for the body type they are targeting. They simply recreate the same tight-fitting, little black dress and expect it to work for every body type that comes in. To me, that just creates more depression and self-esteem issues among the plus size community.

Yes, many of us want to lose weight to not only be healthy but feel healthy but shouldn’t our society accept us as we are in all of our forms, good or bad? This is something that often baffles me when I think about the world today. That no matter how many times by family and friends tell me that I’m beautiful, I can look online or in a magazine and see that I am not beautiful to the majority of our world.

Plain and simple, it hurts and I want to feel like I’m a part of my world. Maybe being thin isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I know all women and men have self-esteem and body image issues that they fight separately every day. I have never doubted that, but looking at our world makes me wonder if, even with all the body positive and #TheseCurves campaigns and movements, will the world ever acknowledge a fat girl in a thin world?

2017 New Year’s Resolutions

2017 new year's resolutions

After taking a week off from Blogmas, I am back and plan to be better than ever! New year, new me… right? Well, sorta. This year has been a whirlwind of emotions and crazy ups and downs. Apart from the obvious negatives that happened, I started my first semester of my senior status in college, I moved into my own apartment, I got a decent job for extra cash, and I have started planning to leave the country for the first time ever! There have been good times and definitely bad but I’m alive and I want to work on improving myself even more with the new year.

#1 Continue to work towards losing weight and getting healthier.

This will forever be everyone’s New Year’s goal because it is one that everyone needs to worry about after the holidays. Although I was doing well with this before my mom passed, I felt short after that and I haven’t been able to steer myself in the right direction since. I want this to change!

#2 Graduate successfully.

Obviously, I don’t see this going wrong at this point. This coming up spring is my last semester of classes and then I will be student teaching in the fall. I am so excited to keep moving forward with this part of my life and finally getting to a point where I am teaching as a career!

#3 Save money to rent a house.

Having been thinking about this for awhile and have talked with both my boyfriend and roommate in regards to the topic. We’ve decided that it would be great to move into a house so we have more room and also more space for the three of us. With having three fur babies (although one is in a cage), it can be difficult to live in a small two-bedroom apartment.

#4 Begin monetizing my blog.

Although I hoped to reach this goal awhile ago, I still want to work towards it. I don’t know much about monetizing or what I need to do to start moving forward with that. I have moved over to being completely self-hosted through Bluehost* while using a WordPress.org control system. So, that’s a step in the right direction… I think?

#5 Focus more on content for my readers.

I really use my blog as an outlet right now. This is the reason I started my blog as well. However, as I move towards monetizing and using my blog for helping others rather than myself, I want to focus on things that my readers want to read about. Now, obviously, my readers enjoy what I write about now so I will not completely abandon my ways.

Blogmas Day 25 | MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

merry christmas

Well, we made it, guys! It’s officially the last day of Blogmas on Life of Kimberly! I have never done this long of a streak with having a new post every single day. I am so proud that I made it through to the very end. Not only is it the last day of Blogmas, but it is also Christmas – one of my favorite holidays of the year.

Being the first Christmas without my mom, I’m really struggling with my emotions on this day. It’s been such a surreal last few months and I miss her more and more each day. I am so grateful for all of my supporters whether you just read my blog, comment every day, or even my friends and family who don’t even recognize that I do blog. Everyone has been there for me in ways that I can never show enough gratitude for.

This Christmas, I wanted to extend the biggest thank you to all of my amazing supporters. I hope that I’ll be able to hold a big giveaway or just do something specific for those most loyal to my blog this time next year but, as I get no income from blogging, I am living on limited means.

To plan for the next year, what would you like to see in a future giveaway? I definitely want to try and include makeup and beauty products, as those are definitely my weakness, but there are so many awesome brands and products around that I want to know specifics. Give me the deets in the comments below!

Blogmas Day 22 | 10 Things I Don’t Regret

10 things i don't regret

A lot of people say they regret decisions they’ve made in their life. Whether it was eating that cheeseburger this afternoon or breaking up with your long-term boyfriend of seven years, you can probably think of something that you wish you hadn’t done. Well, I’m here to focus on the positives of moving forward. I’m going to share with you guys 10 things that I don’t regret doing in my life. Whether you see it as a bad move or not, the things that I’ve listed have made me into the person I am today and I’m pretty proud of that woman.

  1. I don’t regret breaking off my first and only engagement. Believe it or not, I’ve been engaged before. It was probably the worst decision I’ve ever made in my life and it is something that I definitely do not regret breaking off. The guy I was engaged to treated me awful and it was an extremely toxic relationship.
  2. I don’t regret enjoying myself at every all you can eat buffet ever. As Tallahassee said in Zombieland, “You’ve got to enjoy the little things.” Buffets are a fabulous gift from God that need to be fully taken advantage of… especially when they are filled with any type of Asian food.
  3. I don’t regret spending a little extra on things I didn’t necessarily need. Even though makeup isn’t a necessity and I don’t need four hundred different shirts with my sorority one them, I still want them. I work and I pay my bills before all else but I definitely do splurge on things occasionally. Don’t judge me. 😛
  4. I don’t regret going back to someone who previously broke my heart. My current boyfriend is the single most amazing man I’ve ever been with. He treats me the best I have ever been treated and, surprisingly enough, he broke my heart a while before we ever got together. I gave him another chance and he hasn’t taken it for granted.
  5. I don’t regret moving into the dorms when I could have stayed home. I always wanted the college experience like everyone else. I lived down the road from my university, but I still wanted to see what living in the dorms was like. So, no, I don’t regret spending way too much money to live in a tiny room with a random stranger.
  6. I don’t regret dropping people who were once good friends. Even the best of friends can change. I’ve had many of my best friends turn into people that I just do not care to associate with anymore. I definitely don’t regret leaving them in my past and moving forward with new people.
  7. I don’t regret joining a sorority my senior year of college. Everyone is like, “Why would you join a sorority with only a year and a half left of school?!” Well, because I wanted to. I had always wanted to but never had the guts to do it. I finally took the jump into recruitment this past semester and made my home in the Epsilon Omicron chapter of Alpha Delta Pi.
  8. I don’t regret staying at my job even though I don’t need to. I currently work at the local Sonic Drive-In in my town. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. It’s a fast food job so it’s not the most glamourous work out there but my co-workers are what keep me around. I love them and, even though I could survive without the money, I just enjoy being there.
  9. I don’t regret planning spontaneous trips to see Beartooth. I don’t have to go to concerts. I don’t have to see the same band multiple times when I can listen to them on my phone as many time as I want. I do it because it’s my favorite band and I love the feeling of being at a live performance of some of my favorite music.
  10. I don’t regret changing my major to special education. This is probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. Even though I changed my major twice, I wouldn’t take it back for anything. I only added one extra semester to my college career and I’ll have the best career in the entire world.

Blogmas Day 16 | Current Beauty Wishlist

current beauty wishlist

My beauty wishlist is forever growing. Every time a new “hip” product comes out, I start watching YouTube videos from my favorite beauty gurus about that product and looking at swatches of it. It’s probably one of the worst problems I’ve ever had. I’m addicted to makeup. That being said, I’m not a millionaire and there are still plenty of things that I want to buy.

I have concocted a small wishlist of my current wants in the beauty world. These are only but a small portion but they are things that currently spike my interest. I am already in love with what I’ve seen from these products and I can’t wait to finally get my hands on them.

From top to bottom, left to right:

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Skin Frost in Ice Cold

Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette

Lorac Mega Pro 3 Palette (No Longer Available)

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

Tarte Tartiest PRO Amazonian Clay Palette

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette

Kylie Cosmetics Limited Edition Holiday Box

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation

Of course, the list could go on but these are things that have had my eye recently and I really want to get my hands on them. I highly suggest the brands as I have tried them all, with an exception to Kylie Cosmetics. I am a makeup junkie and, hopefully, I will get the help I need soon.

Blogmas Day 11 | Body Positive Quotes for “Those” Moments

body positive quotes for those moments

Being the holidays, I haven’t exactly been taking care of my body the way I should. Granted, I really haven’t done that most of my life. I’m not going to lie. I’ve always hated exercise. I have asthma and have always been bigger. This makes exercising either painful or a real struggle. That’s why I just don’t do it. I’ve had those random spurts where I’ll go to the gym every day for a couple months and count my calories to lose weight. I’ll lose 10-15 pounds then I’ll give in to my desire… food. Now, I know this isn’t healthy, and believe me when I say I’m working on it, but I constantly knock myself down because of this.

I love food. It’s human and it’s what we all need to survive. Is chocolate, ice cream, bread, and pasta good for me? Well, no… but it’s delicious and makes me all warm and fuzzy when I eat it (really, it happens). Why should I hate myself for enjoying food? Why should I down myself for being plus size? I know what you’re thinking… I shouldn’t! And you’re right… but everyone struggles with their body image. Not just plus size girls like me, but all humans. Even little kids who realize that their bodies are changing and that they are different from that of their friends at school.

During these times, there’s nothing more comforting than realizing that it’s okay. It’s okay to be big, it’s okay to be small, it’s okay to be athletic, it’s okay to be normal. It’s just okay to be whatever you want and have whatever body you want. When I struggle, I look to articles, quotes, and my loved ones to bring myself happiness and comfort in who I am. Since I’ve been struggling, I wanted to extend some positivity to my readers and let you all know… you are never alone.

Blogmas Day 1 | Happy Birthday, Mom.

happy birthday mom

Although I have not talked about it on my blog, I have mentioned it on my social media. My mom, who was my best friend and my biggest inspiration, passed away on September 21st of this year. She was in surgery in order to better her lifestyle. The surgery went great but something happened in the recovery period and she did not make it. I still do not think I have truly come to terms with this tragedy. The relationship I had with my mom was like no other. She made me feel whole. I could tell her anything and she would answer as a friend and a mom but never held back her feelings about whatever it was. She was truly the ideal mother and all I could have ever wanted in a parent.

Since my birth father was not around for my childhood, she was all I had. She was the mom, the dad, the best friend, the shoulder to cry on, and so much more. We were always really close but once I moved to what I now consider my “hometown”, we became so much closer. She became what I aspired to be as a human being. She was the ideal worker, mother, friend, grandmother, and just perfect. Perfect in my eyes and in so many others. The amount of sadness that has been bestowed upon my life and my loved one’s lives has been massive. She was a huge part of our everyday lives and we are missing a big part of ourselves without her.

Today is her birthday. She would have been 47 years old today. She was so young, so gentle, and so kind. She had so much left to live for. She was about to graduate with a Bachelors in Business Administration, she was going to begin her ultimate weight loss surgery and live a healthier lifestyle, and she was going to do things that she always dreamed of! I was and still am so proud of her progress before she passed.

Some people say that “dwelling” on someone passing away is not healthy. Although I do get very upset when I realize I can’t call my mom and tell her I love her or complain about how much homework I have, I don’t consider my talking of her in this way dwelling on her being gone. I consider it admiring her life. She was the epitome of perfect in my eyes and, although there were many things she wanted to change, I love her just the way she was. She made life worth living and a smile worth showing.

I cannot explain how lost I feel without her, but she deserves to know, all the way up there, that we all are still thinking about her. We’re going to celebrate her birthday as if she never left us and hope she’ll stop by for a visit during the party. ❤️

I love you, Momma. I miss you so much.

Things to Include in Your Planner/Bullet Journal

Bullet journaling has been all the rage here lately. You see tons of blog posts, videos, and more about it but you still see the classic “Plan With Me” posts/videos as well. I personally still use a planner and plan to upgrade next August when I need a new one–duh, you know I’m getting an Erin Condren… as a celebration of my student teaching! Chit Chat | Semester in Progress

Heeeeello everyone! I can’t believe it has been so long since I’ve gotten to sit down and blog. I miss you all so much. I hate that I get so busy during the semesters but such is life – you gotta do what you gotta do! Plus, adding being in a sorority to my plate really didn’t help my already busy schedule.

Let me just give you a little peep into what a week in the “Life of Kimberly” REALLY looks like:

  • Monday: Classes from 8:30am-2:45pm with a 40-minute break for lunch from 12:20pm-1pm, SCEC meetings will be held on this day (previously had them on Fridays but our info meeting was on a Monday)
  • Tuesday: Class from 9:30am-10:45am then a loooong break until 5pm where I have a night class from 5pm-8pm; during my break I normally do homework or I have things that I have to do (e.g. I went to an education abroad workshop this past Tuesday during my break and I’ve also had meetings with friends/peers during that time when I can fit it in)
  • Wednesday: Classes from 8:30am-2:45pm again with that same break but I may or may not work a closing shift that night (normally like 4pm or 5pm to close, which is 11pm but I won’t normally leave until almost midnight); any break I get in between, or if I don’t work, will be used for homework, cleaning the apartment, running errands, etc.
  • Thursday: Class from 9:30am-10:45am then I have tons of meetings to catch up on; this Thursday I have an advising session for study abroad (though I may skip this as I think the workshop helped me with all that I need), a phone interview with an organization that I’ll be a Peer Buddy for, a date with a sister, then dinner with my best friend
  • Friday: Always work pretty much ALL weekend because I can’t normally work during the week (aka Monday-Thursday) and I try to work at least three days a week as much as possible; I don’t have classes on Fridays but I have job coaching for a mentor program from 2pm-3:30pm and then normally a closing shift from 4pm or 5pm to close. This week I also have an event for an organization from 12:30pm-2pm right before my job coaching
  • Saturday: Usually work like 11-8 or 12-9 on this day so I wake up at like 10am-10:30am, get ready for work, and head there; once I’m off, I’ll usually clean up my apartment some and work on homework (or just pass out because I’m exhausted)
  • Sunday: I can only work an opening shift on this day, which is normally 7:30-3:30, because I have meetings for my sorority every Sunday at 5pm and I have to go to them; these meetings can last any length of time and I have a “new member” type meeting shortly after our official meeting each Sunday; once I get done with all this, I’ll normally get any homework that HAS to be done by Monday finished then crash because I’ll have class at 8:30am the next morning (although now most of our classes will be “online” for the rest of the semester so I get a bit of a break from this – YAY!)

Within all of this, I have random events that happen on different nights for my sorority, different meetings/events for my other organizations, priorities that I have to complete tasks for in my officer positions, and so on… it’s really been running me into the ground here lately. I haven’t had ANY time to myself until now… and it’s 11:51pm.

HOWEVER, although stressful, this semester seems to be going well so far. All the grades I’ve gotten already have been 100s and I couldn’t be more pleased as I don’t know how I’m even surviving at this point (basically on coffee and concealer – maybe that should have been my blog’s name). I really am enjoying being a member of the Greek community and a sister of Alpha Delta Pi. I’ve been buying waaay too many t-shirts to prove it! I’m super proud to have letters that I can call home and I love sharing it. My other organizations seem to be having a lot going on too, which I’m always excited about. Part of me loves when my planner is chalked full of fun things to do and the other part dreads looking at what I’ve got going on each and every day. Thankfully, I AM organized with my planner so it saves my life on a day-to-day basis.

Honestly, I really just wanted to get on here and talk to you guys. You know it’s one of my favorite things to do and I can never stop talking most of the time… heh. (Looking at my current word count of 798… oops.) So, on that note, I’m going to finish this off with a motivational quote to keep you all moving (and myself because, let’s face it, I’m basically dead right now).

Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.” – Jerry Rice

Love & positive vibes always.

August Review | Hello, September!

Super late blog post for you guys… hope you don’t mind.

I cannot believe that August is already over. It feels like it began three days ago and it all just flew by. I feel awful because I haven’t been writing posts but I have been so busy that I have barely even seen my boyfriend… and he lives with me! Between classes starting, joining a sorority, my other school organizations starting back up, work, and just trying to have somewhat of a life, I haven’t been able to do much other than nap (when I get fit it into my schedule). I’m actually avoiding a nap right now so I can do some homework and finally get a post to you guys! (I know, I’m so sweet.)

I wanted to do this so I could see how I did on my goals for the month of August! My next post will be setting goals for September, of course, because how else would I get through each month without trying to plan everything out to a tee. So, without further blabbing, here is how I did on my goals for August.

Personal Goals Review

#1 Focus of loving myself a little more. | I haven’t done awful with this but I haven’t done great. I try to look cute as far as my outfits but I haven’t put as much effort into my makeup… which really makes me sad! Like I said before, I love doing it but I am just so tired in the mornings that I don’t want to do anything that isn’t sleep for ten more minutes.

#2 Finish my current book of choice. | I most definitely did not do this. I actually started another book on top of the two that I already have started. Of course, you can’t blame me for this one because it is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. (I KNOW, RIGHT?! I’M FANGIRLING, TOO.) I will make my way through them all… eventually.

#3 Throw myself into the semester/school activities. | I have definitely done this… perhaps a little bit too much. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had any time to just relax and have fun. I’ve made time for a couple lunch dates with my best friend and late night dinner with my sisters but that’s really it. I need to learn that balance between it all.

#4 Pick up the apartment daily. | I did SO much better at this but I still haven’t quite got it mastered. I did try to do something in the name of cleaning each day, even if it wasn’t much, and my boyfriend helped out a ton because he only has work to worry about. He’s really been a godsend these past few weeks.

#5 Lose 5 more pounds. | I actually don’t know if I did this one or not! I’ve been pretty bad about tracking my calories the past couple of days but I need to get back on track with it and eat healthier. I’m really trying but it’s so hard when my habits become so irregular due to school. I need to weigh-in to see where I’m at soon!

Blogging Goals Review

#1 Reach 50 email followers. | Failed. Miserably. I have a whopping total of 4 followers through my email subscription. I’m actually pretty sad about it. I don’t know what I did before that got me so many email followers but I’m going to have to up my game if I’m ever going to get to that amount again.

#2 Reach 50 Bloglovin’ followers. | Well, definitely didn’t make it to 50 (maybe I should have set these goals a little lower?) but I got to 16 so that counts for something. I feel like that’s a good growth for as little as I’ve had time to be online this month.

#3 Continue to schedule posts ahead of time. | I definitely didn’t manage to get the two weeks worth of posts out for my first two weeks of school, like I had hoped. I did have about a week and a half scheduled but after that, I dropped off the face of Planet Blog. I really am going to try to pick myself back up but I need a day where I can just get things done for my blog the entire day if that’s going to happen.

#4 Stay on my blogging schedule. | I stuck to this until about halfway through the month after classes started. I still plan to keep doing things on this schedule but I may have to drop to only doing one post a week for now if I can’t keep up with three posts a week. I hate doing that but with how busy I am, that may be best for during the semesters.

#5 Keep up with my new Facebook group, Blogwarts. | This one has much better success! With the help of my amazing admins on my Facebook group, I’ve been able to keep this going strong all throughout August. I’m super proud of Blogwarts’s success and I really hope it continues to grow into an amazing resource and blogging family.
