10 Adult Ways to Stay Creative Over Summer Break

10 adult ways to stay creative

10 adult ways to stay creative

Everyone always worries about kids getting bored over summer break. Parents break out the chore lists and then send the kids outside to play all day until dawn after they have finished. No one really stops to think… what about the adults? Sure, some people work, as I do, but we all have days off, down time, and times where we are just plain bored. I have found some awesome ways for us adults to be creative over the summer, especially for those collegiate adults like me, without our usual hustle and bustle of the semester.

#1 Paint!

Yes, this seems childish and maybe even a little bit ridiculous but painting, coloring, drawing, etc. is so much fun. You can do it all and have an awesome picture to hang up in your living room as well. I cannot tell you how many canvases I have made on days that I am just bored out of my skull. No inspiration? Check out Pinterest! They have awesome canvases with tons of different things that can inspire you to create some similar or something completely your own!

#2 Go on a nature hunt (with your animal!)

nature walk

I don’t know about you guys but my pup loves to be outside. He’s a husky/labrador mix so it is normal for his breed mixture. If you have a pup that feels the same, slap a leash on that sweet baby and head out into the wild (okay, it’s fine if you just walk around your neighborhood). There are so many things you can discover while going on a “nature” hunt if you will, even if you are just walking around the block. Your dog, and you will get exercise, you will soak up some Vitamin D, and you will get to experience the beauty that is Mother Nature.

#3 Bake something

bake something

We all know we have to cook in order to eat unless you prefer take-out 24/7. Baking is an awesome stress reliever, allows for tons of creativity, and you can even decorate whatever you make to add some more zest into your life. Bake a cake, roll up some cookie dough, make homemade bread from scratch. Take this time to explore your culinary abilities and always have a snack (or meals for three days, if you’re like me) when you’re finished!

#4 Go to the lake/beach

go to lake beach

After here, lakes are where it’s at if you don’t have a pool. By all means, if you live near the beach, I would highly suggest that water to the water in the lakes of Kentucky (bleh!). However, a great way that I find to get inspiration is by going out and experiencing it. If you love to swim, then going out to the lake is an awesome way to have fun and gain creativity. Even if you don’t like to swim, walking along the water with your toes squishing is a great relaxation technique.

#5 Write a story

write a story

Writing is one of my favorite pastimes, obviously. Feeling like you have all these ideas with nowhere to place them? Write a story! It doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to have a name. Just write what you want to write about and have fun doing it. Whether it’s a love story about aliens falling in love or a thriller where your best friend goes missing, whatever trips your trigger!

#6 Play with chalk on the pavement

You may think of this as a child’s way of passing the time or being creative but it is so much fun. Not only are you letting your creativity shine through, you are outside and enjoying the fresh air while you do it. Granted, make sure that it is okay to write with chalk all over the areas that you are filling with your beautiful artwork, but feel free to have fun with it. Write quotes, draw landscapes, make a self-portrait.

#7 Create a playlist of summertime music

create a summer playlist

Music is one of my favorite ways to express myself and whenever I need a little boost in my creativity, I always turn to it. Whether I am jamming out to some classic rock or dancing along to the latest pop single, I enjoy getting to play around with music. Creating a playlist that fits your summer needs is a great way to bring positivity into your days. Play it when you are feeling bored and dance around the house, backyard, or even in the pool until your heart is content.

#8 Grow a garden

grow a garden

Although gardening is not my strong suit and I like in an apartment complex, I think it would be amazing to be able to grow a garden of summer flowers. If you are like me and terribly forgetful, try to stick to things that need lots of sunlight but not much water management. Grow some beautiful blooms in your backyard, along your sidewalks, or even just in front of the house for a little pop of color to brighten your days.

#9 Dance in the rain

dance in the rain

If you love to dance like me, then you’ll love this idea. Rain is something everyone dreads during the summer. You want to be out enjoying the sunshine, not cooped up in the rain. Like the Cat in the Hat once said, “I know it is wet, and the sun is not sunny. But we can have lots of good fun that is funny!” Take advance of that rain and go dance in it. If you are hot-natured, you’ll love the feeling of the rain on your skin, and if not, then you’ll just have fun being silly outside.

#10 Tie dye!

tie dye

Tie dye is coming back for kids, adults, and the like. Make something your own by getting something white, whether it’s a bag, hat, t-shirt, or even a pair of shorts, and tie it to fit your personal color-filled needs. Tie dying is a fun way to get creative and you can Pinterest or Google so many different techniques to make different designs. Here is an awesome article that shows you several different ways to tie dying your fabrics.
